Life Lately, and Little Victories Along the Way

Ramadan is almost over. Although I don’t fast during Ramadan since I’m a Christian, I try to be considerate since I’m in an Islamic country. It’s respectful not to eat or drink in front of those who are fasting. So yeah, it [hunger] takes a toll on me.

By the way, I rode the Riyadh Metro for the first time yesterday! I was so excited and proud of myself for trying something new. It was such a great experience, and I’m really glad I did it!

Oh man! I must sound silly sharing this like it’s some sort of milestone. It’s because I’ve been living in Saudi Arabia since the 90s, and over the years, I’ve adapted to the way life is here. I never had the opportunity to learn to drive or get used to shopping alone. While women can drive in Saudi Arabia now, it felt like it was too late for me to start learning, especially since I’m not as quick or alert as I was a few years ago. So, for now, I’m celebrating this victory—being able to ride the metro on my own, without my husband. I feel so accomplished!
